Colouring the eggs: preparation for the big fight

There is a legend for the first Easter egg. Mary Magdalene came to Emperor Tiberius to tell him about Jesus’s resurrection holding hen eggs in her hands. However, the emperor didn’t believe her. He told her that if this was true, then the eggs she was holding would have to turn red. And they did. That’s why the first Easter egg is painted in red and this is the most important colour of all associated with Easter.

The Easter eggs are painted on Thursday or Saturday during the Holly week. They can be eaten only on Easter and during the week after.

The eggs need to be hard boiled first and then cooled down.
Most of the paints have to be mixed with hot water and vinegar. After that the eggs are dipped into them and left in the dye for a while for better results.


Nowadays, the eggs can also be decorated with different ornaments or stickers. The egg dyes are very similar to the food ones used in bakery and are completely harmless for the human organism.

The first egg is always painted in red and needs to be kept safe until the next Easter. It is a bad omen if the egg brakes at any point before that.



The traditional Easter egg tapping game takes place on Sunday. Some people also call it ‘the egg fight’. Every member of the family is selecting an egg depending on its size and shape. Opponents agree on which one to start first. Then they are tapping their egg over the opponent’s. They turn the eggs after that and repeat the action.

Then the opponents are switching until all of the eggs are broken apart from one- the winner. There is an omen that owner of that last egg will have a wealthy and healthy year.
